The story began in the roaring 20's when a man named R.W. Bender hopped a freight train in Chicago with nothing but the clothes on his back. With his destination being California. Somehow, he ended up in Grand Rapids, MN and needing a job. Finding out no one would hire him. Decked out in wing tipped shoes and pin striped suit. R.W. traded his clothes with a farmer for a pair of bib overalls. In the near future to come he then met his wife Florence. The couple then ventured north and fell in love with the Island Lake Area. R.W. and Florence then purchased 3 miles of lake shore on Island lake, now known as Benders Camp.
Richard Bender is the son of Florence and R.W. Bender who eventually became a huge part in what Bender's camp is today. Richard married Patsy Storzbach. Together they ran Benders Camp for decades to come.
Sons of Richard and Patsy Bender, Pete, Joe, and Tony are now the owners of Benders Camp with their wives Patty and Sonia Bender. They want to continue the legacy and create long lasting memories in a place that has always been close to their hearts. We are transforming but we want to keep the richness of the resorts history and encourage gathering together.
